"In 1986, ..., as an operative of the African National Congress’s armed wing, detonated a car bomb outside Magoo’s Bar and the Why Not Restaurant in Durban, in which 69 people were injured and three women killed. He was sentenced to death, but was reprieved and released in the early ’90s."The bomber went on to stand for election for the position of chief of police. This resulted in a slew of potentially defamatory newspaper articles about the bomber by The Citizen.
The bomber sued for defamation.
